New Hope Elementary Students Get
Books for Summer Break

By Charlton Budd
Posted June 11, 2016 at 11:49 am

An estimated 650 elementary students at New Hope Elementary School in Hillsborough picked out six to
ten books to read over their summer break to keep them engaged.
Students gathered at the elementary school on June sixth and seventh to work with staff members and
volunteers to help the students select books.
Students were encouraged to select books they were interested in to keep them engaged over the
summer.
According to a New York Times article, researchers found that the lack of intellectual engagement over
the summer accounts for about half of the overall difference of achievement between higher and lower
income students.
The achievement gap is one of the main reasons for the Books on Break program allowing kindergarten
and first grade students to stay engaged during the summer months.
