4/19/17 <br /> 4 <br />personal testimony from a committee member who shared <br />her 3-generation family history of mental illness and suicide. <br />• Be the Light suicide prevention awareness walk was held on <br />the campus of UNC and was intended to bring awareness to <br />the younger age population around suicide. The speaker, <br />who is a licensed professional counselor, UNC alum, a <br />member of a Greek organization, was an athlete, and a 3-time <br />suicide survivor, shared his personal story of dealing with <br />mental illness and how that encouraged him to become a <br />counselor. The event reached 50-100 individuals who <br />included students, community members and professionals. <br />• The month ended with a community focused QPR <br />(Question, Persuade, Refer) training to train community/lay <br />people 3 simple steps that can be used to help save a life <br />from suicide. <br /> <br />Physical Activity & Nutrition <br />• The PAN committee is implementing a 6-month Eat Smart <br />Move More Consistent Messaging Campaign that focuses <br />increasing knowledge and influencing behavior change <br />related to eating smart and moving more. The campaign will <br />run October 2017 through March 2018 and will target one <br />message a month for 6 months. The PAN committee has <br />partnered with 15 agency/organizations that will each <br />implement and promote this campaign through a variety of <br />strategies with the goal to reach thousands of OC residents <br />over the 6-month timeframe. <br /> <br />HCOC <br />• The annual celebration for HCOC will be in January with <br />implementation of a Poverty Simulation. Community <br />residents, committee members and service providers will be <br />invited to participate in the simulation to help bridge the gap <br />from misconception to understanding through this <br />interactive immersion experience to help participants fully <br />understand the realities of poverty.
