Health Director’s Report <br />May 31, 2017 <br /> <br />• The health department received reaccreditation status on May 19th, 2017. A press <br />release will be sent announcing the news! <br />• Board of Health members are invited to a Campus and Community Coalition community <br />forum to discuss an upcoming campaign to encourage parents to speak with their <br />children about alcohol and other drugs. If you are interested in participating, please <br />plan to attend a community meeting to talk more about the campaign on Tuesday, July <br />27 from 1-2 at the Chapel Hill Public Library, Meeting Room A. <br />• We are in the process of interviewing for the Communications Manager position and <br />have a number of exceptional applicants. <br />• A group of 5 students, calling themselves the Menthol Exterminators, from our Orange <br />High School TRU club were selected to attend Truth Initiative’s National Summit on <br />Youth Activism! The National Summit on Youth Activism will take place July 19th –July <br />22nd at the National 4-H Conference Center in Washington, D.C. The students were <br />selected from a competitive pool of applications for this all-expense paid (includes <br />airfare, lodging, and meals) learning opportunity. <br />• Approximately 50 health department employees participated in a workshop offered by <br />HR Analyst Vicki Jones called “The Inevitable Change”. Content included change <br />management strategies and interactive exercises. <br />• The Family Success Alliance partnered with Empowerment, Inc. to submit a GSK Impact <br />award worth $40,000. The Health Department cannot receive any of this money directly <br />because we are a healthcare provider and GSK customer, but, if awarded, the resources <br />can go towards program implementation through our partners. <br />• On May 4th, Donna King participated in the Farm to Table Tour at Blackwood Farms <br />sponsored by DEAPR. Some 305 fourth graders received education on becoming <br />“Skeeter Defeaters”. Mosquito prevention handouts in English and Spanish went home <br />with each child. <br /> <br />
