Health Director’s Report
April 26, 2017

 Welcome to Beverly Scurry who will support the Board of Health with the
implementation of its strategic plan. Thank you to Coby for assuring a smooth transition.

 Congratulations to the Family Success Alliance for moving to Round 2 of the BUILD
Challenge (25 applicants selected from a pool of 135).

 The manager’s office has asked the health department to propose a scope of work and
budget for a contract with a consultant to implement recommendations from the
mental health gap analysis. The contract would replace the health department budget
request for a Behavioral Health Program Manager position at this time.

 The BOCC approved funding for contracts with Refugee Community Partnership,
Refugee Support Center, and El Centro Hispano to provide additional services to the
refugee/immigrant communities. Thanks to Susan Clifford for her presentation to the
BOCC and her work to put these contracts in place.

 The Dental clinic is expanding its preceptor program for dental hygienists from UNC.
They will pilot having an additional hygienist on-site beginning in August through
December to serve additional clients.

 The health department sponsored a successful annual Provider Breakfast on April 12,
2017 highlighting updates to vaccination recommendations, resources for
refugee/immigrant populations in Orange County, and the growing Zika epidemic.

 Exciting community prevention efforts are underway, including a new partnership with
Freedom House to offer smoking cessation services to clients, collaboration with the
Town of Chapel Hill to implement smoke-free public housing by July 2018, and the roll-
out of the Spray Before You Play campaign ( to reduce risks associated with mosquito
exposure).

 We won a statewide award for video production for our orientation/overview video
from NC3C (NC City and County Communicators). We were up against counties and
municipalities with big budgets and teams that put out some pretty amazing
productions. The award is a second place trophy and is in our awards cabinet , next to
our other NC3C award.
