I
Duke University
Duke University's station has been in existence for 7 years, the longest duration
of the three stations visited. It is located near Brightleaf Square on Buchanan
Street in central Durham. Duke currently runs 11 trucks (pickups) on CNG, and
has nine years of experience with their existing CNG infrastructure. The Duke
system is a Fuelmaker system, similar to that of the Town of Chapel Hill (and the
type proposed for Orange County).
Duke officials expressed positive feedback on their CNG technology and
vehicles, and a high level of satisfaction with their reliability and functionality. The
university plans to continue adding CNG vehicles to their fleet over time.
Town of Chapel Hill
The Town of Chapel Hill has a fast -fill CNG station at their existing Public Works
facility on Airport Road. Chapel Hill's station is a 3600 psi /3000 psi FuelMaker
unit, and is very similar to the facility at Duke (and proposed for Orange County).
It should be noted that the Town will be relocating their fueling stations and all
other Public Works functions to the Town Operations Center on Millhouse Road,
which is under construction and slated to open in late 2006. The Town
Operations Center is planned to have a larger CNG station capable of handling
more vehicles and a shorter turn - around time between fuelings.
The Town currently has 11 CNG vehicles, as follows:
CNG Vehicle
2 Crown Victorias
Department/Use
Police Department
3 Honda Civics
Police, Parks and Rec, Parking Services
1 Dodge van
Public Works / Motor Pool
5 Ford F -150 pickups
Solid Waste, Parks and Rec, Landscape
