Duke Energy-Neighborhood Energy Saver Program

Duke Energy is an electric and natural gas utility serving customers in the Southeast and
Midwest. The Duke Energy Neighborhood Energy Saver Program uses a community
approach to swiftly reduce energy bills for a large number of participants. Duke Energy
utilizes census and other data to identify low-income neighborhoods of approximately
1,000 homes. Then, working with local leaders to build neighborhood engagement and
buy-in, and conducting energy assessments, energy-saving improvements, and
participant education at no cost, the program is able to upgrade hundreds of homes in a
cost- and time-efficient manner while reducing carbon pollution. Program representatives
work with local leaders in interested neighborhoods to hold community events that explain
the upgrade process and its benefits. The Program’s free upgrades eliminate the barrier
of up-front costs, and its focus on partnering with community leaders to build
neighborhood engagement and buy-in overcomes common trust concerns associated
with utility-sponsored programs.

Representatives of the Program will be at the meeting to make a presentation, and the
governing boards can discuss this item as necessary.

Attachment 1 – March 8, 2018 Memo with Powerpoint Presentation
1
