He said part of the problem is that the 1
district was set up a long time ago, and then nothing happened. 2
Commissioner Burroughs said the public is now informed, and a long pause is not 3
necessary, and suggested that the process keeps moving forward at a reasonable pace. 4
Mayor Stevens said this item will come to the Town board at the end of March, and 5
suggested that the Town go ahead and continue their process. 6
Town Commissioner Bell said because the County has paused, it has deescalated the 7
importance from the Town’s perspective, and he suggested waiting to hear from the County. 8
Mayor Stevens said one option is for the Town to proceed, which would involve another 9
public hearing 10
Margaret Hauth said if the Town does not continue the process, then enough time would 11
pass where the Town would have to re-conduct the public hearing. 12
Town Commissioner Mark Bell said he is hearing that the County may pause for a while, 13
and another public hearing may be needed 1 to 4 quarters from now, which would just be an 14
extra hour of their joint time, which is not an impactful burden. 15
Travis Myren said the County would intend to complete the additional public education 16
over the summer, and be ready to continue the process in the fall. 17
Mayor Stevens asked if the preference would be for the Town to continue. 18
Travis Myren said yes. 19
Margaret Hauth asked if the Town board wants to proceed with the process at the end 20
of March. 21
The Town Board agreed to proceed with its processes. 22
23
Commissioner Rich said she got a call f rom a resident in Waterstone, who asked if the 24
“W elcome to Hillsborough” sign could be moved further toward the Waterstone area, or if 25
additional signs could be put up to make more people feel welcome as they enter the area. 26
Margaret Hauth said the sign was nowhere near the Town limits when it was built, but it 27
was a convenient location and there was a willing property owner. She said staff will review 28
this, but that is an old sign, and is probably too old and too heavy to move. She said it has to 29
go on private property, and not in the right of way, and if staff receives direction to work on this, 30
staff would find locations to put additional signs. 31
Commissioner Marcoplos said Commissioner Jacobs is receiving the Sportswriter of the 32
Year award tonight in Raleigh, and was unable to attend this meeting. 33
34
The meeting adjourned at 9:17 p.m. 35
36
Mark Dorosin, Chair 37
38
39
Donna Baker 40
Clerk to the Board 41
42
43
44
