Article 10: Definitions <br /> Section 10.1: Definitions <br /> <br />Orange County, North Carolina – Unified Development Ordinance Page 10-34 <br /> <br />Outdoor Lighting, Holiday Decoration <br />Holiday displays, decorations and greetings, which relate to any federally designated holiday, legal <br />holiday or religious holiday. <br />Outdoor Lighting, Lamp <br />The source of electric light: the bulb. To be distinguished from fixture and luminaire. <br />Outdoor Lighting, Lumen <br />A unit of luminous flux. One foot-candle is one lumen per square foot. For the purposes of this <br />Ordinance, the lumen-output values shall be the initial lumen output ratings of a lamp. <br />Outdoor Lighting, Luminaire <br />The complete lighting unit or fixture consisting of a lamp, or lamps and ballast(s) when applicable, <br />together with the parts designed to distribute the light, including reflector, lens, or diffuser to position and <br />protect the lamps, and to connect the lamps to the power supply. <br />Outdoor Lighting - Mercury Vapor Luminaries <br />Lamps within which ultraviolet and yellowish-green to blue visible light is produced by an electric <br />discharge through mercury vapor. <br />Outdoor Lighting, Semi-Cutoff Fixture <br />An outdoor fixture shielded or constructed in such a manner that it emits no more than 5% of its light <br />above the horizontal plane of the fixture, and no more than 20% of its light ten degrees below the <br />horizontal plane of the fixture. <br />Outdoor Lighting – Sodium Vapor Luminaries <br />Lamps within which ultraviolet and yellowish-orange visible light is produced by an electric charge through <br />a small amount of sodium and neon gas. <br />Outdoor Lighting, Tube Lighting <br />Gas-filled glass tube, excluding common fluorescent tube bulbs, that becomes luminescent in a color <br />characteristic of the particular gas used, such as neon, argon, krypton, etc. <br />Outdoor Lighting, Upward <br />Projection of light above the horizontal plane. <br />Overlay Zoning District; Overlay Zone <br />A special zoning district that applies supplemental standards in addition to the underlying zoning <br />requirements. <br />Package Treatment Plant <br />Privately owned and operated sewage treatment facility.
