Residential development is underway on lands east of the <br />site. The remainder of the site and surrounding properties appear similar to the 1966 <br />photograph. <br /> <br />1982 Aerial Photograph – A man-made ponds is visible on the northeast portion of the <br />site. The majority of the site appears to be in a pastoral setting. Mace Grading <br />Company, Inc. appears to occupy the adjoining property to the southeast. Increased <br />residential development is visible along Highway 70. The surrounding properties appear <br />similar to the 1972 photograph. <br /> <br />1993 Aerial Photograph – The site is wooded. Mace Grading Company, Inc. appears <br />to have encompassed additional land to the southeast. Industrial buildings are visible on <br />lands located south of Highway 70. Surrounding properties to the north, east, and west <br />appear similar to the 1982 photograph. <br /> <br />2008 Aerial Photograph – The site is wooded. A man-made pond is visible on the <br />northwest portion of the site. The pond on the northeast portion of the site has been <br />drained. The pond on the southern portion of the site has been partially drained. The <br />surrounding properties appear similar to the 1993 photograph. <br /> <br />2013 Aerial Photograph – The site is cleared (trees removed for silvicultural purposes). <br />The southeastern portion of the site appears to be utilized as a staging area for Mace <br />Grading Company, Inc. The ponds on the southern and northwestern portions of the site <br />are bank full. The surrounding properties appear similar to the 2008 photograph. <br /> <br />VIII.4. Historical Topographic Maps <br /> <br />Topographic maps prepared by USGS utilize assorted mapping symbols and shapes to <br />help determine the location of past and present buildings and land use types (Appendix <br />E). Historical topographic maps were reviewed to help ascertain the past use of the site. <br />A review of the site physiography is discussed in Section III.3 of this report. <br /> <br />USGS, Efland, North Carolina, 7.5-Minute Topographic Quadrangle, dated 1968 <br />The central portion of the site is mapped as cleared land. Wooded land is located on the <br />northeastern, southern, and northwestern portions of the site. A man-made pond is <br />depicted on the southern portion of the site. Wooded land, agricultural land, and <br />residential dwellings are mapped throughout the site vicinity. Highway 70 is located <br />approximately 450 feet south of the site. <br /> <br />VIII.5. Additional Historical Resource <br /> <br />Additional historical records were not reviewed during the scope of this report. <br /> <br /> <br />IX. INTERVIEWS <br /> <br />On February 26, 2016, HEnv conducted a telephone interview with Mr. Carl Mace, the <br />current owner of the site. Mr. Mace has over 50 years knowledge of the site and <br />surrounding properties. Mr. Mace acquired the property from his paternal family in the <br />early 1970s. Mr. Mace indicated the site was planted with soy beans during his youth, <br />and was later used as cow pasture until the 1980s. The site was used for silvicultural <br /> 63
