Article 10: Definitions <br /> Section 10.1: Definitions <br /> <br />Orange County, North Carolina – Unified Development Ordinance Page 10-38 <br /> <br />In cases where there <br />may not be any formally <br />‘enclosed’ area, the <br />surface area shall <br />include such reasonable <br />and proportionate space <br />as would be required if <br />a border or frame were <br />used. <br /> <br />Sign, Alteration of <br />Includes, but is not be limited to, the addition of sign surface area, the changing or relocation of light <br />source or the relocation of an outdoor advertising display from of a sign structureone position to another. <br />This term shall include structural changes in the sign, but shall not include the changing of copy on a sign <br />that is designed as a changeable copy sign. <br />Sign, Animated <br />Any sign that uses movement or change of lighting to depict action or to create a special effect or scene. <br />Sign, Architectural Feature of <br />Any construction attendant to, but not an integral part of the sign, which may consist of landscaping, <br />building, or structural forms that enhance the site in general; also, graphic stripes and other architectural <br />painting techniques applied to a structure that serves a functional purpose, or when the stripes or other <br />painting techniques are applied to a building provided such treatment does not include lettering, logos or <br />pictures. <br />Sign Area <br />That area enclosed by one continuous line, connecting the extreme points or edges of a sign. The area <br />shall be determined using the largest sign area or silhouette visible at any one time from any one point. <br />This area does not include the main supporting sign structure, but all other ornamental attachments, inner <br />connecting links, etc., which are not a part of the main supports of the sign are to be included in <br />determining sign area. Also see “Sign, Advertising Display Area.” <br />Sign, Awning <br />A structure supported entirely from the exterior wall of a building and composed of non-rigid materials <br />(except for the supporting framework) upon which a signadvertising material is indelibly drawn, painted or <br />printed. <br /> Following are examples of an awning signs: <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> 45 45
