Harvey, Planner III (919) 245-2597 <br />Craig Benedict, Director (919) 245-2575 <br /> <br /> <br />PURPOSE: To review and make comments on text amendments to the Unified Development <br />Ordinance (UDO) initiated by the Planning Director modifying existing sign regulations. <br /> <br />BACKGROUND: As the Board may recall, staff has been working on amendments to existing <br />sign regulations for approximately 1 year to address concerns over advertising needs for non- <br />residential development on larger parcels and to ensure our standards are consistent with the <br />recent Reid versus Town of Gilbert US Supreme Court decision. Please refer to Section B of <br />Attachment 1 for more background information. <br /> <br />This item was first reviewed by the Planning Board at its April 1, 2015 ORC meeting. This item was slated for presentation <br />at the December 2, 2015 ORC meeting but was pulled so staff could address County Attorney <br />comments. <br /> <br />Please note there have been significant changes to the proposal since April and December of <br />2015 to address comments from the County Attorney’s office with respect to revising existing <br />standards to be ‘content neutral’ in order to be consistent with the Gilbert court case. <br /> <br />It is expected that the proposed final version will be on the April Planning Board agenda for a <br />recommendation. These amendments are scheduled to be presented at the May 23, 2016 <br />Quarterly Public Hearing. <br /> <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: Please refer to Section C.3 of Attachment 1. <br /> <br /> 14 14
