Harvey, Planner III (919) 245-2597 <br />Craig Benedict, Director (919) 245-2575 <br /> <br />PURPOSE: To review and make a recommendation to the Board of County Commissioners <br />(BOCC) on text amendments to the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) initiated by the <br />Planning Director modifying existing sign regulations. <br /> <br />BACKGROUND: As detailed within Attachment 1 current sign regulations do not offer a <br />distinction between allowable signage for non-residential developments located within <br />urbanizing or rural areas of the County. Non-residential developments, regardless of location or <br />size, are afforded the same sizes of signage. Recent court decisions, most notably Reed <br />versus Town of Gilbert, also necessitate modifications to existing regulations to ensure <br />compliance. <br /> <br />The amendments seek to provide additional sign area for large non-residential projects within <br />the urban areas of the County and clarify existing regulations with respect to their interpretation <br />and application. <br /> <br />Please refer to Section B of Attachment 1 for more information. <br /> <br />This item was reviewed by the Planning Board at its April 1 and December 2, 2015 ORC <br />meetings.
