Article 7: Subdivisions <br /> Section 7.8: Access and Roadways <br /> <br />(d) Generally the road and shoulder should be crowned as shown in the <br />drawing below so that runoff will drain to the ditches on both sides of the <br />road. <br /> <br /> <br />Figure 7.8.5.D.2: Crowning of Roadway, NCDOT Typical Shoulder/Cross Section <br /> <br />(e) In some situations it may be desirable not to crown the road but to have <br />the travelway sloped to a single ditch as shown below. This is applicable <br />in four situations: <br />(i) Where it is necessary to cut down on the length of a ditch in <br />order to reduce the erosion potential by decreasing the volume <br />of runoff, <br />(ii) Where it is difficult to construct ditches due to rock, <br />(iii) To provide for super-elevation, or <br />(iv) In curves. <br />(f) The single slope described in (e) should always drain toward the inside <br />of a curve. The crown slope of the road and shoulder should be <br />approximately 1/2 to 1 inch per foot. <br /> <br />Figure 7.8.5.D.2.e/f: Crowning of Roadway, NCDOT Typical Shoulder/Cross Section Single Slope <br /> <br /> <br />(3) Surface Materials <br />(a) Acceptable material for surfacing the travelway is Aggregate Base <br />Course (commonly called "crusher run"). <br />(b) Soil type base materials (commonly called "Chapel Hill Gravel" or <br />"Chapel Hill Grit") will be accepted under the following conditions: <br />(i) The material originates from a quarry approved by the North <br />Carolina Department of Transportation. <br />(ii) The grade of the road is less than 8%. <br />(iii) Where the grade is greater than 8% a layer of crusher run stone <br />will be placed over the Chapel Hill Gravel before compaction. <br />(iv) Sources of surface material shall be verified with the certifying <br />professional before placement. <br /> <br />Orange County, North Carolina – Unified Development Ordinance Page 7-19 <br /> <br />112
