3—22 <br />Orange County Comprehensive Parks and Recreation Master Plan <br />CHAPTER 3 - Park Inventory /Assessment / Future Park Sites without Master Plans <br />Future Northeast District Park -3981 Schley Road, Hillsborough <br /> <br />Size: Land Area: 143 acres <br /> <br />Overview: Orange County acquired this property in 2007 following an <br />extensive search for a site that would meet the identffied needs for a <br />district park in north-central Orange County, which dates back to the 1988 <br />Master Recreatfon and Parks Master Plan. This property is being “land <br />banked” for future park development. A park master plan will be devel- <br />oped using a collaboratfve process that includes community input. The <br />property is currently leased to a local farmer for cattle and hay productfon. <br />Future Millhouse Road Park - 6823 Millhouse Road, Chapel Hill <br /> <br />Size: Land Area: 79 acres <br /> <br />Overview: Orange County acquired this property in 2004 and 2007 <br />through it’s Lands Legacy Program. The property includes the former <br />Blackwood family farmstead. The buildings are generally well preserved <br />and have recently been up-fit for the temporary housing of the Orange <br />County Parks Operatfons Base. The site is located within the Rural Buffer <br />and is a neighbor to Duke Forest, sharing prime forest land and an identf- <br />fied Natural Heritage Area. The property is bounded to the east by <br />Millhouse Rd. and the nearby Chapel Hill Town Operatfons Center. Large <br />open fields and pine stands in the center of the property would be suitable <br />for actfve parks and recreatfon facility development. <br /> <br />Anticipated facilities include: The future district park is expected to feature a combinatfon of actfve and low - <br />impact recreatfon, including lighted playing fields. Much of the western half of the property is forested and is <br />expected to have nature trails and picnic areas. An indoor recreatfon center has been discussed and may be in- <br />cluded in future planning. <br /> <br />Location and proximity to the greatest number of users: The property is located about one mile north of the <br />Town of Chapel Hill and less then a 1/2 mile from I-40. The area is primarily rural in character. The expected <br />primary users will be residents of central and southern Orange County. <br /> <br />Types of programs anticipated: Predominantly actfve recreatfon. Specific programs will be identffied with the <br />development and adoptfon of a park master plan. <br /> <br />Anticipated Cost: Not Known <br />Anticipated facilities include: The future district park is expected to feature a combinatfon of actfve and low - <br />impact recreatfon, including playing fields on the open sectfons of the site. Much of the southern half of the <br />property is forested and is expected to have nature trails and picnic areas. A small portfon of the site <br />(approximately 5 acres) may be suitable for co-locatfng a solid waste convenience center for residents in the <br />northeast part of the county. The entrance to that center would be from Mincey Road. <br /> <br />Location and proximity to the greatest number of users: The property is located about five miles northeast of <br />Hillsborough and 1/2 mile east of NC 57. The site is bounded to the north by Schley Road and to the south by <br />Mincey Road. The area is primarily rural in character. The expected primary users will be residents of north - <br />central Orange County. <br /> <br />Types of programs anticipated: Some combinatfon of actfve and low-impact recreatfon.
