3—20 <br />Future Hollow Rock Access Area - Pickett Road, Durham <br />Size: Land Area: 75 Acres <br />Existfng Structures: <br /> Equipment Shed: 2,000 sq. ft. <br /> <br />Special Features and Amenities: <br /> New Hope Creek <br /> Hanging Rock <br /> Open Field <br /> Natural and Historical Heritage <br /> Trails (2 miles plus connectfng <br />offsite trails) <br />Overview: <br />This 75-acre preserve serves as a northern access point and major trail head to the New Hope Creek open space <br />corridor, a multf-jurisdictfonal effort of the City of Durham, Durham County, Orange County and the Town of <br />Chapel Hill. The trail system will link to public trails in Duke Forest, located adjacent to this site. All four jurisdic- <br />tfons partfcipated in the purchase of the property, and private donatfons added more than $225,000, demon- <br />stratfng the public’s interest for this area to be preserved and developed as a trail access. The property is <br />already highly used with informal trails, posing risk issues since the site cannot be opened and managed for <br />public use untfl the installatfon of parking, signs, and bridges. In late 2013 the site was awarded a $200,000 RTP <br />(Recreatfonal Trail Program) Grant along with Durham and Orange County each pledging $ 25,000 in matching <br />funds to construct four bridges, a parking area and install some signage.
