3—2 <br />Orange County Comprehensive Parks and Recreation Master Plan <br />CHAPTER 3 - Park Inventory / Assessment / Existing Park <br />Size: <br />Land Area: 60 Acres <br />Existfng Structures: <br /> Former School: 30,000 sq. ft. <br /> Picnic Shelter with Restrooms: 1,560 sq. ft. <br /> Maintenance Shed: 860 sq. ft. <br /> <br />Overview: <br />Orange County’s 1988 Master Recreatfon and Parks Plan envi- <br />sioned a future park co-located with the County’s Northern <br />Human Services Center on NC 86. The Center was built in the <br />1950s as the Cedar Grove School for African-American <br />children, but when the school closed in 1976 it was converted <br />to a County facility. A baseball/softball field was constructed <br />in the 1980s for County recreatfon programs, and other <br />programs took place in the building’s gymnasium and class- <br />rooms. In 2001, Orange County voters approved a Parks and <br />Open Space bond that included $1,200,000 for enlarging the <br />park. A park master plan was adopted in 2005 and Phase 1 of <br />the park opened in April 2009. <br /> <br />Location / Users: <br />Located in a rural area six miles north of Hillsborough, Cedar <br />Gove Park attracts baseball and softball teams from around <br />the region as well as day users from the nearby communitfes <br />of Cedar Grove, Carr, Schley, and Caldwell. <br /> <br />Funding for Phase 1: <br />$1,200,000 County Open Space Bonds; <br />$500,000 NC Parks & Recreatfon Trust Fund <br />$148,000 County “Payment-in-Lieu” Funds <br /> <br />Types of Programs Offered: <br /> Baseball Leagues / practfces and games <br /> Soft Ball Leagues / practfces and games <br /> T-Ball Leagues / practfces and games <br /> Softball Tournaments <br /> Baseball Tournaments <br /> <br />Reserved Facilities or Uses: <br /> Picnic Shelter <br /> Playing Fields <br /> <br />Special Features and Amenities: <br /> 2 Lighted Adult Ball Fields <br /> 1 Multf-Purpose/ Youth Ball Field <br /> 2 Lighted Basketball Courts <br /> 2 Playgrounds <br /> Picnic Shelter with Restrooms <br /> Paved, Lighted Walking Track (1/3 mile) <br /> Fishing Areas <br /> Hiking Trails (2 miles) <br /> <br />Annual visitors: 35,000— 40,000 <br />Cedar Grove Park - 5800 NC 86N, Cedar Grove <br />3 <br />32
