Approved 12/12/16
OC Board of Adjustment – 10/10/16 Page 46 of 113

Kara Brewer: Each bed is going to be 70 by 4. 1
2
Barry Katz: So that’s 280 square feet. 3
4
Kara Brewer: Yeah. And that’s roughly. I mean in some areas. 5
6
Barry Katz: Right. And how many blocks per square foot? 7
8
Kara Brewer: It depends on the type of flower and the spacing that I have to do. It could be, let’s say 5. 9
10
Barry Katz: Ok, so that’s 1,400 per bed. And how many beds do you have? 11
12
Kara Brewer: We’re going to do at least 22 to start… 13
14
Barry Katz: 22 beds? 15
16
Kara Brewer: Yes. 17
18
Barry Katz: So you’re into about 20,000 or more blocks? 19
20
Kara Brewer: Yes. And that’s not all at once. You do it succession so that you have blooms year round. 21
22
Barry Katz: Excuse me but, I assume that different beds… So you’re only planning on using certain beds to 23
grow certain flowers and then they’re fallow the rest of the year. You’re not going to plant them over again 24
and put in anything else? 25
26
Kara Brewer: Correct, not right now. Getting started imp just going to see how everything works and on 27
seasonal. 28
29
Barry Katz: Managing 20,000 blocks is a massive undertaking. 30
31
Kara Brewer: It is, yes. 32
33
Andy Petesch: And so will you hire people and employ them in the area to work on the farm? 34
35
Kara Brewer: Yes. 36
Barry Katz: Right. It’s all expenses and you’re assuming no loss through infection in seedlings, or anything 37
like that. I mean, it seems like as in a lot of optimism in what it is that you’re planning on doing. And I don’t 38
really see that you really reconcile the costs and the amount of labor that’s going to be involved in doing 39
this. Do you have expectation that they’ll be weeds in this bed? 40
41
Kara Brewer: Yes. What we’re doing to try and stop that is we’re putting down landscape fabric. So what 42
you do ahead of time is you have to burn holes into the landscape fabric and then put that down. So that 43
does help. It’s not full proof but. 44
45
Barry Katz: Ok. 46
47
Andy Petesch: You’ve already talked about the bees and you’ve talked about the agritourism activities. You 48
mentioned workshops. Are you integrating workshops within the wedding events as well? 49
