MINUTES <br />ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES <br />December 19, 2015 <br />1 <br /> <br /> <br />THE ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES MET ON SATURDAY: December 19, 2015 at the <br />Hillsborough Commons, Hillsborough, North Carolina. <br /> <br />BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES MEMBERS PRESENT: Ann Wilkerson, Vice-Chair; Claire Millar; and Pat <br />Garavaglia. <br /> <br />GUEST: Janet Berntson and Luke Dennis. <br /> <br />BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES MEMBERS ABSENT: Tamara Dempsey-Tanner and Earl McKee. <br /> <br />STAFF PRESENT: Nancy Coston, Director; Lindsey Shewmaker, Human Services Manager; Denise Shaffer, <br />Human Services Manager; Sharron Hinton, Human Services Manager. <br /> <br />I. Call to Order and Introductions <br /> <br />DSS Vice-Chair, Ann Wilkerson, called the meeting to order at 12:07pm. <br /> <br />II. Board Comments <br /> <br />Pat Garavaglia and Claire Millar commented that the toy program is wonderful and they are proud to be <br />a part of it. They commended staff for all the work that goes into making the holiday programs such a <br />great community event. <br /> <br />III. Public Comments <br /> <br />Janet Berntsen noted that staff at Social Services work really hard. <br /> <br />IV. Agenda Changes <br /> <br />None. <br /> <br />V. Action Items <br /> <br />On a motion by Pat Garavaglia, the Board approved the minutes of November 23, 2015. Claire Millar <br />seconded the motion. The motion was carried without dissent. <br /> <br />VI. Items for Discussion and/or Decision <br /> <br />1. Program Updates <br /> <br />Sharron Hinton informed the Board that the agency had received approximately 10,000 donated <br />toys for the Toy Chest. Approximately 300 children and elderly or disabled adults were sponsored <br />through the Share Your Holiday Program. <br /> <br />Pat Garavaglia and Ann Wilkerson noted how nice the Adolescent Parenting Program holiday event <br />was. <br /> <br />Nancy Coston informed the Board that staff have been working with the ABAWD reports and have <br />reduced the list to approximately 560 people. There are plans to meet with clients in January to <br />evaluate needs and assist them with meeting the work requirement to continue receiving Food and
