Privette 2 November 18, 1999 <br /> Division Director’s Reports: <br /> <br />John Sauls reviewed information leading up to the Leg Hold Trap Ban Proposal item being on the <br />commissioner’s agenda. The commissioners are asking for more information and certification of the <br />APS information presented. Meetings have been scheduled with the Wildlife Conservation officers and <br />the Trappers Association. <br /> <br />The Conservator’s Center, Inc proposal to open an endangered species breeding facility has been <br />withdrawn. They discovered that the majority of their land is in Alamance County and will go through <br />the Alamance approval process. <br /> <br /> Eileen reviewed the Asthma Initiative and gave an update on the Asthma Coalition. She reported that <br /> statistics show that asthma is the sixth-ranking chronic condition in the country and the leading <br /> serious chronic illness in children. <br /> <br /> A recent study conducted by the NC Center for Health statistics for the fiscal year of 1998 shows <br /> that 10% are between the ages of 0-14. In addition the rate of hospitalization for asthma in children is <br />on the rise. Also about 17% of emergency room visits of the pediatric population are attributed to <br />asthma. The Asthma Coalition is working towards developing goals and directions for a community- <br />wide effort. <br /> <br />She informed the Board that the asthma coalition had submitted an application for a $7500 grant to the <br />state but the grants were in jeopardy because of the flood relief. <br /> <br />IV. Discussion Items/Reports <br /> <br /> A. Dental Health Data and Trends 1998-99 <br /> Dr. Eugene Sandler, Dental Health Director, and Angela Cooke, Dental Health Coordinator <br /> Presented highlights from the 1998-99 fiscal year activities of the dental program. . <br /> <br /> B. Update on Emergency Response Plan <br /> Dr. Summers reviewed the outline of the Emergency Preparedness Plan and the Board was <br />able to review draft response scenario. Barry Jacobs requested that the Health Director seek out <br />the Shearon Harris Evacuation Plan and review it. Rosemary Summers will consult with <br />Nick W aters on this matter. <br /> <br /> C. Board Retreat Follow-up/Safety Net Initiative <br /> The Board decided to stay flexible and cautious and not join the full effort with Chatham County right <br /> now. Janet Southerland volunteered to be on a joint Chatham/Orange committee to discuss. <br /> Brenda Crowder-Gaines will also participate until another board member volunteers. <br /> <br />D. Board of Health Commissioners January Retreat <br /> The Board agreed that no new goals or initiatives would be forwarded at this time. The Department <br /> needs to finish up the current goals first. <br /> <br /> E. Board of Health Committee Structure and Roles for Board Members <br /> Dr. Summers reviewed the proposed committee structure and the Board members assigned. <br /> <br />Mel Hurston made the motion to adopt the committee structure and assignments with final <br />review in January. The motion was seconded by Barbara Chavious and passed.
