ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: December 12, 2006
Action Agenda
Item No. (o-;f~
SUBJECT: Resolution Honoring Lantern Restaurant
DEPARTMENT: Economic Development PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No
ATTACHMENT(S):
Resolution
Award Synopsis
INFORMATION CONTACT:
Dianne Reid, 245-2326
Noah Ranells, 245-2330
PURPOSE: To recognize Lantern Restaurant, one of only three restaurants in the southeast
named as America's Top 50 Restaurants by Gourmet Magazine.
BACKGROUND: Lantern Restaurant is located at 423 W. Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, just a
few doors from the Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitor's Bureau. Since opening its doors to
diners in 2002, the Lantern and its chef-owners, Andrea & Brendan Reusing, have been strong
supporters of local farms. The Reusings' goal is to present simple, authentic Asian food using
seasonal and local ingredients, such as vegetables, pasture raised meats, and dairy products
from 25 farms in Orange and neighboring counties.
In addition to being known as a restaurant that supports local farms and buys local farm
products, Lantern Restaurant initiated Lantern Table, a periodic special seasonal dinner that
highlights a local farm. This series has taken eating locally and seasonally to a new level with
many of the food items coming from a 60-mile radius of the restaurant.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the attached
resolution honoring Lantern Restaurant for its national honor, being recognized as one of the top
50 restaurants in the United States, and commend its chefs for being strong supporters of local
farmers and their products.
