The proposed program would entail meeting with a registered dietitian as <br />a group and individually, structured physical activity sessions, and detailed behavior <br />change strategies. These components are not offered at other local programs. Since <br />two thirds of Americans are overweight or obese, this is another effort to promote <br />healthy lifestyles within the organization. <br /> <br />Motion to approve the implementation of the pilot program “The Healthy Way” for <br />Orange County employees and forward to the Board of Commissioners, the fee request <br />of $175 for the series or $15 per session was made by Kate Wilder, seconded by Moses <br />Carey, and carried without dissent. <br /> <br />E. Acceptance of Bioterrorism Funds/Public Health Preparedness Position <br /> <br />Bioterrorism Competitive Project Money $ 44,868 <br />All counties in North Carolina were offered a chance to submit proposals in FY 02-03 in <br />response to a Request for Proposal issued by the Division of Public Health, Office of <br />Public Health Preparedness & Response. The money disbursed by the DPH is a Federal <br />allocation to the state, and is again available to the counties for FY 03-04. This spring <br />the money was used to contract two staff persons to begin working on the Volunteer <br />Corps and review and re-write the department’s Bioterrorism Plan. For FY 03-04 the <br />department will use this money to hire one staff person to continue these projects <br /> <br />Bioterrorism Lab Improvements $3,000 <br />Funding was approved for each county to upgrade or purchase new computers and <br />printers in their clinic labs to meet minimum standards set by the state lab. The new <br />equipment will enable the counties to access the state lab results on-line, thus <br />reducing the waiting time for clients and practitioners. The department plans to <br />purchase one new computer and two printers. <br /> <br />Bioterrorism Communications and Risk Management $305 <br />Funding approved for communications systems, phones, radios and/or a department <br />risk analysis/assessment and associated costs. <br /> <br />Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response $3,000 <br />These funds may be used for any of the following: tuition, registration fees, purchase <br />of education or training courses or material, travel and per diem, facilities rental, <br />breaks and meals provided as part of a training, and any other materials necessary to <br />achieve training goals and objectives for this project. <br /> <br />Motion to approve Bioterrorism money to be used by the department, and forward <br />recommendation to the Commissioners for approval and amendment to the budget was <br />made by Tim Carey, seconded by Kate Wilder, and carried without dissent. <br /> <br />F.
