Welcome and Introductions <br /> <br />Alice White called the meeting to order at 7:00 P.M. <br /> <br />II. Approval of October 28, 2004 Agenda <br /> <br />Board Education: <br />The motion to approve the Agenda of October 28, 2004 was made by Jessica Lee, seconded by <br />Kate Wilder, and carried without dissent. <br /> <br />Oral Health Access Issues for Preschool and School Age Children <br />Jessica Lee, DDS, MPH, DrPH, UNC Dental School <br /> <br />Inadequate access to dental care is commonplace among children of families living in poverty. <br />Nationally, among parents who feel that their children have unmet health care needs, 57% report the <br />unmet need is for dental care – nearly twice the number reporting the need for medical care. A lack of <br />dental care for low-income and Medicaid eligible children often results in severe or persistent pain, <br />inability to eat, failure to thrive, increased susceptibility to other medical conditions. Failure to prevent <br />dental disease results in missed school days, dysfunctional speech and compromised nutrition. The <br />presentation provided an overview of the access to dental care issue in North Carolina. Powerpoint <br />slides available in file. <br /> <br />III.
