Welcome and Introductions <br /> <br />Chris Harlan, Chair, called the meeting to order at 7:20 P.M. and introduced the guests <br />present at the meeting. <br /> <br />II. National Nutrition Month: Educational Presentation <br /> <br />Renee Kemske, MPH, RD, talked to the Board about National Nutrition Month, a nutrition <br />education and information campaign sponsored annually by the American Dietetic <br />Association which is the nation’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. <br /> The campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices <br />and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. Registered Dietitian Day, <br />celebrated March 11th, increases awareness of registered dietitians as the indispensable <br />providers of food and nutrition services and recognizes RDs for their commitment to <br />helping people enjoy healthy lives. The theme for 2009 is “Eat Right” and focused on <br />three age groups; children, adults and older adults. The American Dietetic Association <br />encourages all Americans to eat right and stay fit no matter what your age and to help <br />yourself feel your best by making healthy food choices and being physically active <br />every day. <br /> <br />Renee also provided additional information on the following services provided by the <br />Health Department: <br />1. Medical Nutrition Therapy, not only for obesity, but also malnutrition sometimes <br />seen in refugees. This is a mandated service. <br />2. Increase in both clinic and community demand for nutrition services <br />3. Client trends: 0-20% pay, obesity, chronic disease co-morbidities, substance <br />abuse, mental health, etc.
