Recent Decision on New More Focused Purpose: <br />• Primary mission and audience: Deliver evidence to support recommended actions by the Board <br />of Orange County Commissioners to protect Orange County's environment. <br />o Offer trusted and relevant baseline data to help prioritize management practices <br />• Avoid being overly prescriptive since there are lots of factors that go into each decision <br />• Look to examples from other jurisdictions of policies they've implemented or <br />recommended <br />• Must be written in direct, concise, non - technical terms <br />o Must focus on things they can control <br />• Secondary mission and audience: Increase broad understanding of Orange County <br />environmental trends among citizen groups and educators (If the SCE meets the primary <br />mission, this mission will follow smoothly) <br />o Basic Science — give a scientific snapshot as completely and accurately as possible, and <br />be honest about measures of confidence and uncertainty <br />■ The SOE will still be of limited use to a researcher — geography is narrow, CFE as <br />source may not be recognized as authoritative <br />• More regular updates would help form an identity and confidence <br />• Identify data gaps and make recommendations to fill them <br />• Schools and /or Environmental Educators <br />• UNC- Chapel Hill <br />• Durham Tech Orange County Campus <br />• CHCCS and OCS - Secondary level <br />Proposed Student Workplan: <br />■ Communications and Meetings: <br />o Students to meet with Orange County Commission for the Environment at beginning <br />and end of their semester <br />■ Students will attend CFE meetings: 7:30pm on Feb 12th and Apr 91h <br />• Communicate with committees over email in between meetings <br />• May 4, 2018 at 12:OOpm - CFE representatives and staff will attend final presentation of <br />findings <br />• Brennan Bouma will act as liaison <br />Order of main tasks: <br />1. Understand existing SOE and new directions <br />2. Look for other state of the environment models and other pre -made analyses of Orange <br />County's environment <br />• Decide if authoritative and applicable to Orange County's geography <br />• If not go to the raw data <br />3. Lit review on best indicators" <br />o Which are most relevant, which are repetitive or ancillary? <br />
