Page 2 of 2 Harry Kavros
Other Comments:
This application was current on:11/20/2017 3:42:35 PM Date Printed:11/28/2017
Supplemental Questions:
Boards/Commissions appointments:
Orange County Planning Board (REQUIRES DISCLOSURE STATEMENT)
Please list the work/volunteer experience/qualifications that would add to your expertise
for this board.
* Strategic planning for Columbia Law School, Fordham Business School, and various non-
profits.
* Management of staff at these two universities.
* Management of fixed income/economic research department.
* Management of grants administration (Ford Foundation).
* President, Friends of Orange County Public Library,
What do you see as the responsibilities of this board, and what do you hope to
accomplish if appointed?
The primary responsibility is to inform the Commissioners. I hope to contribute to a balanced
view, a quantitative analysis, and a qualitative report concerning growth, budgets, traffic, and
other areas revolving around development.
What role should the Planning Board take in guiding and regulating growth?
The Board should serve county residents and businesses. The interests of developers should be
subordinate, and when engaged should be urged to offer community amenities.
What unique perspective can you bring to the Orange County Planning Board?
I have been a manager on Wall Street, a dean at two universities, and an active volunteer in
Orange County.
What do you consider to be be the most important issues facing Orange County related
to growth?
Relative loss of income with additional low-to-middle priced housing, opportunity for light (and
not water intensive) industry, affordable housing, traffic, loss of farm land, and quality of life.
How would you, as a member of the Planning Board, contribute to the implementation of
the Board of Commissioners' adopted Goals and Priorities?
I would like to get the input of county offices (such as Family Success Alliance, arts councils) and non-profits (for
housing and the homeless) to see how the complex network of agencies can support development. I have interviewed
public school executives (Superintendent, board chair, others), and would like to get their input into how the schools
can respond to development. I would like to examine revenues and expenses in the county budget to be able to offer
suggestions.
28
