ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: November 14, 2006 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. 7- Q <br />SUBJECT: Orange County Key Volunteer Recognition <br />DEPARTMENT: Board of Commissioners PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): Under Separate Cover INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Volunteer Biographies Clerk's Office, 245-2130 <br />PURPOSE: To present certificates to Orange County Key Volunteers and to announce the <br />North Carolina Outstanding Volunteer Award Winners. <br />BACKGROUND: The North Carolina Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service is <br />an award given by the State of North Carolina as a recognition for all that they do in the <br />community. Each county is allowed to submit up to five individuals, groups, or businesses for <br />this award. <br />Earlier this year the Clerk's office advertised for and received fifteen nominations for this <br />prestigious State award. Nominations were judged by six Orange County citizens and the top <br />five vote-getters were submitted to the Governor's Office. The top vote getter, the only person <br />selected by all six judges, was nominated for a new award, called the North Carolina <br />Outstanding Volunteer Medallion. This award will only be given to 20 recipients statewide and <br />we have not been.told if our nominee will be a recipient. <br />The five North Carolina Award winners are: <br />Me an Jones The Arc of Oran e Count <br />Bert Liverance Habitat for Humanit of Oran e Count <br />Jud Lohman Ronald McDonald House of Cha el Hill <br />Patricia Merriman Duke Communit Hos ice <br />Abb Phel s Ronald McDonald House of Cha el Hill <br />Those other volunteers that are nominated are awarded as Orange County Key Volunteers. <br />Those volunteers include: <br />Karen Doran Ronald McDonald House of Cha el Hill <br />
