consumes less energy and materials than demolition and new construction and increases the economic <br />value of our downtown district and neighborhoods. <br />The City has been interested in preserving historic <br />resources in the community since the 1970s when the <br />first inventory of historically significant structures and <br />properties was completed. In 1989, the City Council <br />approved the Downtown Durham Local Historic <br />District and preservation plan. <br />The City- County Planning Department currently helps <br />to identify, protect, and promote historic resources <br />through the designation of local historic districts and <br />landmarks, establishment and support of the Historic <br />Preservation Commission, and nominating properties <br />and districts for the National Register of Historic <br />Places. <br />Social and Illtu r 111 I11'..' weir iirt <br />Right at the heart of downtown Durham, <br />Historic Parrish Street (also known as Black <br />Wall Street) represents Durham's history of <br />successful black -owned businesses dating back <br />to the 20th century. <br />In honor of the entrepreneurial spirit of the <br />area, The City of Durham's Office of Economic <br />and Workforce Development provides <br />incentives to help create, retain, and expand <br />businesses on Historic Parrish Street. <br />To learn more, visit: durhamnc.gov/510. <br />Arts and culture is one way to increase understanding and communications among people of diverse <br />backgrounds.
