Orange County Animal Services Sheltering Practices and Philosophies 26
Animal Protection Society of Orange County - Felicite Latane
Animal Sanctuary
All information, including quotes, provided by Heather Brown, Director of Public Relations, Animal Protection
Society of Orange County,
Mission Statement: "To build a compassionate community to support and ensure
the well-being of animals in Orange County and surrounding areas"
As relating to the APS Adoption Center; "We are a rescue resource for local
county shelters improving their adoption rates and reducing their euthanasia
rates."
"Our purpose is to extend support to existing county shelters not provide a
shelter for public surrenders."
In response to a question about the shelter being a No-Kill: "In most cases it is an
impossible feat and typically, communities in the U,S. struggle with the pet
overpopulation in their areas and with a solution to the problem. In APS' many
years of experience in operating the county shelter, we were able to greatly
reduce the number of animals euthanized through aggressive spay and neuter
programs. "No Kill" is a goal for anyone who cares about animals, but is
unrealistic in a county setting where accepting all stray and abandoned animals
is a necessary role of government. "
At present, the APS of Orange County is accepting animals from shelters in
Orange, Caswell, and Chatham counties. APS staff selects animals using
specific criteria, which includes temperament and socialization tests to ensure
the best chances of successful adoption.
From opening in October 2004 to July 2006, APS sheltered and successfully
placed over 1,200 animals in permanent homes.
