Orange County Animal Services Sheltering Practices and Philosophies 24
Mission Statement: "The Forsyth Humane Society exists to address an all too
prevalent problem in our community, We are committed to preventing pet
overpopulation by promoting responsible pet ownership, and by providing for the
welfare of homeless dogs and cats, We maintain a "no-kill" shelter where dogs
and cats are cared far while they await adoption by qualifying individuals."
All of their animal intakes are from a waiting list -there are no immediate intakes
-and primarily through the public, though they will work with other area sources,
including a 'Community Care' program with Forsyth Animal Gontral with which
they have a "good working relationship". Adult cats and animals (puppies/kittens)
under five months may wait 6 months for space to become available, For adult
dogs, they have implemented an evaluation program, including behavioral test,
before accepting them onto the wait list -this reduced the numbers of dogs
significantly enough to make the wait for space in the realm of 4-6 weeks.
All animals are adopted sterilized, and they work with the Forsyth Spay/Neuter
Clinic, aloes-aost/high-volume clinic under the Humane Alliance program. They
adopt out over 400 animals a year, They do not take Rottweilers, Pitbulls, or
Chows,
They have several programs operating within the county, including an aggressive
spay/neuter approach and veterinary assistance. They assist with individuals
practicing TNR and an organization called 'Forgotten Felines of Forsyth.' They
also have strong volunteer support,
Forsyth Spay/Neuter Clinic
All information provided by Amy Evans, Head Veterinary Technician
The Forsyth Spay/Neuter Clinic in Kernersville, NC (formerly Save The Animals),
was started three years ago under the auspices of the Humane Alliance (fact
sheet below), They are a dedicated sterilization facility, open four days a week,
that performs 240-250 surgeries a week with a staff of three veterinarians, five
registered veterinary technicians, and two administrators.
They are anon-profit independent agency funded primarily by grants and
donations, but do not have an active fundraising program, However, the support
for their services is strong within the community, Among their support sources is
PetsMart Charities and the DJ&T Foundation (better known as the Bob Barker
Foundation).
They perform surgeries for numerous surrounding counties as well as their own,
including Rowan, Stokes, Yadkin, Iredell, Randolph, and as far away as
Mecklenburg, Part of their program is transportation services to and from these
counties, where they service both individual pet owners and area shelters, Non-
profitorganizations utilizing their services receive a $10,00 discount from normal
