ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: September 19, 2006 <br />Action Agen a <br />Item No. <br />SUBJECT: Resolution to Recognize Hispanic Heritage and History Month in Orange <br />County <br />DEPARTMENT: BOCC P'UBL.IC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): INFORIVIAT1oR1 CONTACT: <br />- Resolution Barry Jacobs, Chair <br />Orange County Board of Commissioners <br />(919) 245-2130 . <br />PURPOSE: To consider a resolution recognizing Hispanic Heritage and History Month in <br />Orange County. <br />BACKGROUND: National Hispanic Heritage. Month is celebrated from September 15 through <br />October 15, honoring the traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and <br />the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean. Hispanic <br />Americans have also contributed throughout the. ages to the prosperity, culture, and history of <br />our nation. <br />The estimated Hispanic population in the United States as of July 1, .2005 was 42.7 million, <br />making the people of Hispanic origin the nation's largest ethnic or racial minority. Hispanic <br />people constitute 14 percent of the nation's total population and as of the 2000 Census the <br />Hispanic. population represents 4.5 percent of Orange County. <br />Orange County has aggressively pursued steps to improve the engagement of the Hispanic <br />community by offering Spanish courses to all county employees at no cost to the individual, <br />creating an emergency communications network to insure potential life saving messages reach <br />the Hispanic community during times of crisis, and multiple County publications are printed in <br />both English and Spanish. <br />FINANCIAL. IMPACT: none <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board adopt the attached <br />resolution recognizing Hispanic Heritage and History Month in.Orange County. <br />
