FROM: Orange County Arts Commission <br />SUBJECT: Monthly Meeting <br />DATE: September 8, 2014 <br />LOCATION: Century Center, Carrboro <br />MEMBERS PRESENT: Katherine Dickson, Deborah Hepp, Ashley Nissler, Kathleen Ponder, Devra Thomas <br />MEMBERS ABSENT: Lindsey Alexander, Brian Finch, Doris Friend, Geoffrey Hathaway, Emily Lees <br />VISITOR PRESENT: Tinka Jordy STAFF PRESENT: Martha Shannon <br />Meeting called to order at 6:30 PM NO QUORUM <br />Topic A <br />Topic B <br />Topic C <br />Discussion Point: Review of August 2014 Minutes <br />Decision /Vote(s): Brief discussion of minutes. <br />Action Item: No vote taken because of lack of quorum. <br />Discussion Point: Director's Report <br />Decision /Vote(s): The decorative bench placed within our public art project at the Orange County Public <br />Library in Hillsborough has been removed. The bus stop in front of the library has been relocated to the <br />other side of the library's entrance, and some other bench has been installed at this new bus stop <br />location. Twenty -four (24) writers attended the "Sense of Place" writing workshop on September 5th with <br />2014 Piedmont Laureate Carrie Knowles at the Burwell School Historic Site in Hillsborough. Staff met with <br />the new County Manager and gave her information about the Arts Commission's programs and services, <br />including information about the previous "public vs. private" debate and our previous public art program <br />(which we would like to re- start). Americans for the Arts' Arts and Economic Prosperity IV is coming up. <br />We will need to budget for it over several fiscal years. BOCC abstract deadlines (to be on their meeting <br />agenda) are approx. 2 -3 weeks prior to their meetings. If we want to present at one of their meetings <br />(about public art or otherwise), OCAC board members should be meeting with them first. There are some <br />changes to the OCAC board meeting schedule. The 11/10 meeting will be at the Orange County Public <br />Library in Hillsborough; the 12/8 meeting will be at OWASA in Carrboro. <br />Action Item: None. <br />Discussion Point: CHOCVB Liaison, Ad Hoc Committee Updates <br />Decision /Vote(s): Deb Hepp reported on the most recent Visitors Bureau board meeting. Nick Dido of the <br />Kenan Institute has created a "brand" for the state at the request of the NC Department of Commence: <br />beaches, mountains, and basketball (plus southern hospitality). A marketing firm in Charlotte will help <br />design the brand. Deb Hepp would like another OCAC board member to attend the October 15th CHOCVB <br />board meeting, as she will be out -of -town. The Marketing Committee discussed how to present OCAC at <br />our Festifall booth — posters, pamphlets, focusing on grant recipients (especially individual artists) with <br />
