Attachment 1 <br />Orange County <br />HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION <br />DRAFT Meeting Summary <br />June 24th, 2015 <br />Old Orange County Courthouse <br />106 East King Street, Hillsborough <br />MEMBERS PRESENT: Todd Dickinson (Chair), Susan Ballard, Rob Golan, Grace White and Bob <br />Ireland <br />MEMBERS ABSENT: Jaime Grant (excused) <br />STAFF PRESENT: Peter Sandbeck <br />GUESTS: Victoria Hensley, Jan Elmore and Brenna Yellin (interns with Preservation <br />Chapel Hill) <br />ITEM #1: CALL TO ORDER <br />Chair Dickinson called the meeting to order at 7:02 pm. <br />ITEM #2: CHANGES OR ADDITIONS TO AGENDA: The chair wished to add a discussion item <br />regarding whether to hold or cancel the July meeting to provide a month off, as we have <br />often done in the past. Staff wished to add an update about the Occaneechi Village. <br />ITEM #3: APPROVAL OF MINUTES (May 27th, 2015 meeting) <br />Golan moved to accept the minutes, seconded by Ireland. Motion passed unanimously. <br />ITEM #4: ITEMS FOR DECISION: None <br />ITEM #5: DISCUSSION ITEMS <br />a. Review of Concepts and Examples of Other County Historic Resources Books <br />Chair Dickinson invited the guests to join members around the table to look at the various <br />examples of publications produced by other counties, and briefly explained our proposed <br />book project. Our job tonight is to look through these books for half an hour to get an idea <br />of exactly what a county inventory book is, how they are organized and laid out, and how <br />we react to these examples. We should be able to agree on a format and design we see <br />here, or some combination thereof, so that we don't have to reinvent the wheel. These <br />books will be available for members to check out and take home if they wish. Members <br />should give their reactions about their favorite aspects of these to help guide us toward a <br />consensus on a format and design we like. Members reviewed about twenty different <br />volumes and shared them around the table. Discussion included pricing ($40 -$60), <br />weight/bulk, the importance of special illustrations like maps, floor plans, historic photos, <br />etc. Five or six of these were designed by B. Williams and Associates, in Durham. The <br />County actually contracted with her back in 1999 to start work on the book but stopped the <br />contract once it was determined that the content was not even close to being ready. <br />Members commented on the written entries, and how they varied in length, content and <br />readability. Most were organized geographically by township etc. The amount of history <br />included in the front sections varied greatly. Members noted that the coated paper stock <br />
