Approved ASAB Minutes—
November 15 th , 2006, Meeting
Page 3
Bob Marotto also added that they reviewed the adoption contract that is used with individual
adopters to determine ways to improve matching up animals with owners. They looked at the
manner in which transfers to other animal organizations and talked about whether there couldn’t
be an agreement between our department and those organizations so that we knew the ultimate
disposition of transferred animal.
New Business
Select Department Updates: Bob Marotto met with the people responsible for the $20 fix,
a spay/neuter program available for people of limited means. As they have run out of
money for their program, they are looking at ways to raise money in different ways, one
of which is to see if they can obtain public funds. A motion was made by James Kramer
and seconded by Bonnie Norwood to invite the $20 fix to a meeting in 2007 to give a
presentation to discuss what and how their program works. VOTE: Unanimous.
Irene Paul, Animal Control Manager gave an update on “Sadie,” who has now been
placed in a new home. She is now walking on leash, under veterinary care, and she is
expected to be spayed soon. It was asked that Debbie Myers be contacted to print a small
article letting the public know about “Sadie’s” situation, and that we recognize the
Chapel Hill resident who worked with “Sadie” to help socialize her and to find her a new
home.
Bob Marotto discussed that while the Animal Services Department is thinking about
filling the vacancy of Animal Shelter Director’s position we are thinking about how that
position fits into the organization now and in the future when we are all in one location.
Bob has been speaking with staff and personnel about some changes in areas of
responsibilities. One possibility would be a management team consisting of three
managers with specific areas of functional responsibility: (1) field services and animal
protection; (2), animal care and veterinary services; and (3) community relations and
customer service. Consideration of this kind is particularly important as we are moving
in to the new facility that will house all animal services staff in one place.
2007 ASAB Meeting Calendar: Motion was made by Pat Sanford and seconded by Ross
Oglesbee to schedule ASAB meetings for every month and to make a decision at those meetings
whether or not the next months meeting needs to be taken off schedule. VOTE: Unanimous.
Nominating Committee: Ross Oglessbee reported that the nominating committee consisting of
Daniel Textoris, Bonnie Norwood and Jean Connerat Austin met and discussed nominations for
the upcoming officer election (at the January meeting). They nominated Kristine Bergstrand as
Chair and Ross Oglesbee as ViceChair for 2007.
