ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: September 12, 2006 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. (p - Ct <br />SUBJECT: Resolution Honoring Turnabout Goat Farm <br />DEPARTMENT: Economic Development PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />A'TTACHMENT(S): <br />Resolution <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Dianne Reid, 245-2326 <br />Noah Ranells, 245-2330 <br />PURPOSE: To recognize Turnabout Goat Farm, recently named North Carolina Meat Goat <br />Association's 2005 Breeder of the Year for Percentage Goats, <br />BACKGROUND: Turnabout Goat Farm, owned and operated by fifth and sixth generation <br />descendants of a family that held an original 900-acre land grant, produces breeding stack for <br />commercial livestock producers on a 10-acre portion of the original land grant. The farm is <br />located in southern Orange County on Ivey Road just off Old Greensboro Road, between Neville <br />and Carl Durham Roads. Amy Mabe and Earl Brewer, owners of Turnabout Goat Farm, were <br />recognized by the NC Meat Goat Association for outstanding performance in over twenty-five <br />goat shows throughout the South, <br />Turnabout Goat Farm effectively uses embryo transfer to allow for rapid genetic improvement of <br />their goats. In addition, Amy Mabe is currently serving as an apprentice judge and plans on <br />becoming a fully accredited judge in the near future. The farm has about 125 goats at this time <br />and has sold goats as far as Massachusetts through annual production sales held here in NC as <br />well as across the nation, Their next sale will be September 23~d in Mt Airy, North Carolina. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: None <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the attached <br />resolution honoring Turnabout Goat Farm for their contributions to local agricultural production <br />and for providing a model of successful agricultural diversity in Orange County. <br />
