Approved ASAB Minutes <br />October 17, 2007 <br />Page 2 <br />Animal IdentificationIrene Paul gave an overview of the Animal Identification Plan Final Report. It was <br />decided that it would be best for the shelter to continue using the rabies tag as our licensing tag and <br />implement the new plan effective January 1, 2008. Instead of ordering from the state we will be ordering <br />from the private sector so that we can have our identifying and contact information added to the tags. <br />Motion was made by Pat Sanford and seconded by Jean Connerat Austin to approve the Animal <br />Identification Plan dated October 10, 2007. VOTE: Unanimous <br />New Business <br />2008 Officer Nominations Tracy Carroll, Caroline Green and Daniel Textoris, members of the <br />Nominations Committee reported that the nominees for 2008 are Ross Oglessbee for Chair and Susan <br />Elmore for ViceChair. The vote will occur at the November 21 st , 2007 ASAB meeting. <br />2008 ASAB Meeting CalendarPaula Ragan discussed the Proposed Draft Calendar for 2008 meetings. <br />The board meetings will be held on the third Wednesday of every month, JanuaryNovember from 6:30 <br />p.m.– 8:00 p.m.. There were no conflicts with the BOCC calendar, Paula will check the availability of <br />conference rooms and try to rotate meeting locations between Hillsborough and Chapel Hill. Once that <br />has been done she will finalize the calendar and resubmit to all members at next ASAB meeting. Motion <br />was made by Pat Sanford and seconded by Jean Connerat Austin to approve the calendar. VOTE: <br />Unanimous <br />Animal Services ProgramBob Marotto introduced Volunteer Program Coordinator Sarah Fallin, who <br />gave an overview and progress of the current activities and programs that she has responsibility for. One <br />is the Volunteer Program Area, which involves a recruiting process, orientation, interviews and training. <br />In the first quarter of this year there was an average of 72 volunteers working at the shelter for a total of <br />410 hours in the month. The volunteers help with dog walks, animal socializing, outreach events, cleaning <br />kennels and feeding animals. Other areas that the volunteers help with are special events such as the dog <br />swim that took place this month at Meadowmont in Chapel Hill. Upcoming special events include <br />Governs Village Event, Chapel Hill Animal Club adopts the shelter for a month, and Shelter Appreciation <br />Week November 410, 2007. In the last quarter there were 10 outreach programs and 3 special events. <br />Sarah also reported that she pairs up with Animal Control to do educational presentations, this would <br />include groups such as the Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools and Orange County Schools, Home <br />Schools, Summer Camp, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Church Groups, etc.. These events help to educate the <br />youth about such things as spay/neuter, responsibility, kindness and care to pets. A few upcoming events <br />will be the Hillsborough and Chapel Hill Holiday Parades and pictures with Santa at Pet Smart. <br />Select Updates Bob Marotto announced that Orange County reported it’s 17 th confirmed rabies case in <br />the Mebane area that involved a raccoon and altercation with dogs that were current on their vaccines. <br />There are 3 more rabies clinics for this year. There is a slight decline of reported cases, from 27 last year <br />to 17 this year. <br />He announced that the Proposed Tethering Report will be reviewed by the BOCC in the upcoming work <br />sessions in November and invites the ASAB members to attend.
