<br /> <br />FROM: Animal Services Advisory Board <br /> <br />SUBJECT: Monthly Meeting Summary <br /> <br />DATE: Wednesday May 18, 2011 <br /> <br />LOCATION: Animal Services Center <br /> <br />____________________________________________________________________________ <br /> <br />MEMBERS PRESENT: Kris Bergstrand, Sue Millager, Aviva Scully, Susan Elmore, Dan Textoris, Andy <br />Uhl, Lori Lumpkin, Dan Textoris, Susan Elmore, Sarah Fallin, Bob Marotto, Jean Austin <br />MEMBERS ABSENT: Suzanne Roy <br /> <br />STAFF PRESENT: Bob Marotto, Sarah Falin <br />____________________________________________________________________________ <br /> <br />Beginning time of meeting: 6:30 pm <br /> <br />Old Business <br />• The agenda for tonight and the summary of the March 16 meeting were unanimously adopted as <br />distributed. <br />• No member of the public was present to comment. <br />Topic A-Board vacancies <br />• Two positions will open end of June. Applicant for At-large position, Mike Stewart, was <br />present and introduced himself, describing experience with dog training and equine <br />rescue. <br />• Motion was made and seconded to recommend Mike Stewart to be a member. It was <br />unanimously supported and will be communicated to the clerk. ASAB will address the <br />other open position at the August meeting. <br />New Business <br />Topic A- Presentation by Deborah Cunningham, Director of Eyes, Ears, Nose and Paws, non-profit from <br />Carrboro <br />• Provides service dogs to people with special needs, which involves selection and extensive <br />training of young dogs and their prospective owners. Trained dogs can detect blood sugar <br />abnormalities in diabetics, and assist physically disabled folks with daily tasks in and out of the <br />home, promoting owner independence and improved quality of life. <br />• Demonstrated service dog (Golden Retriever) in training <br />• Described potential partnership with the shelter to screen appropriate young dogs coming into the <br />shelter for service training. <br />• ASAB expressed unanimous support for relationship with the group <br /> <br />Topic B - ASAB unanimously approved inviting the Coalition to Unchain Dogs to the June 15th meeting <br />to discuss need for support for Orange County residents needing help with fences for their dogs. <br /> <br />Topic C – Animal Services Program Coordinator, Sarah Falin, presented annual review of outreach and <br />volunteer programs. <br />• Volunteer hours are up from last year as well as the number of volunteers. <br />• Rabies clinics provided 883 vaccinations.
