ORANGE COUNTY <br />ADVISORY BOARD ON AGING <br /> <br />Minutes <br />November 8, 2016 <br /> <br />PRESENT: Heather Altman, Mary Altpeter, Colin Austin, Peggy Cohn, Yvonne Mendenhall, Donna <br />Prather, Dick White, <br /> <br />EXCUSED: Teri Driscoll, Winston Liao, Lorenzo Mejia <br /> <br />STAFF: Mary Fraser, Kathie Kearns, Yvette Missri, Janice Tyler <br /> <br />GUEST: Jeff Strickler - UNC Healthcare/Hillsborough Campus <br /> <br />The meeting was called to order by Acting Chair Heather Altman. Following introductions the minutes <br />of the October 8 meeting were approved on the motion made by Dick White and second by Donna <br />Prather. <br /> <br />Guest Presentation <br />Jeff Strickler, Associate Vice-President of UNC Healthcare/Hillsborough Campus gave an overview of the <br />new 72 bed hospital which has now been open for one year. The Emergency Department is averaging <br />60 patients per day. UNC’s Geriatric Medicine Department is now 100% based out of Hillsborough, <br />although the Geriatric Clinic will remain at Carolina Pointe on Hwy 54 for outpatient services. Heather <br />Altman asked if patients can choose which hospital when being transported by EMS. The decision will <br />be made based upon destination guidelines but the paramedics will take the patients’ wishes into <br />consideration. The Hillsborough Hospital campus was designed for future expansion. Discussion <br />followed on public transportation accessibility to the building. <br /> <br />Director’s Report <br />Janice Tyler gave an update on sidewalk construction between the Seymour Center and Homestead <br />Road. <br />The annual Veterans’ Day breakfast will be held at the Passmore Center on November 11 and the <br />Veterans’ Memorial site dedication at Southern Human Services Campus will follow at 11:00am. <br />Project EngAGE’s End of Life Senior Resource Team will host a community conversation on death and <br />dying on November 17 at the Seymour Center. <br />Orange County Animal Services brought dogs to the Seymour Center while the Board of Elections <br />conducted early voting, resulting is the adoption of five dogs. More than 12,000 voters utilized this <br />polling place. <br />The FY17-18 budget process has begun with meetings on the Capital Improvement Plan and goal-setting <br />by the Functional Leadership team. The Human Resources Department is analyzing the Orange County <br />temp employee pool in light of recent legislative changes. The Department on Aging relies heavily on <br />temps and several positions may be recommended for permanent status in the upcoming fiscal year <br />budget including the Passmore evening Facility Manager. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />
