ORANGE COUNTY <br />ADVISORY BOARD ON AGING <br /> <br />Minutes <br />August 9, 2016 <br /> <br /> <br />PRESENT: Mary Altpeter, Colin Austin, Peggy Cohn, Teri Driscoll, Winston Liao, Yvonne <br />Mendenhall, Donna Prather, Dick White <br /> <br />EXCUSED: Heather Altman, Dan Daniel, Lorenzo Meija, Keith Cook <br />STAFF: Mary Fraser, Janice Tyler <br />The meeting was called to order by Chair Peggy Cohn. New Board member, Colin Austin, was <br />welcomed. The minutes of the June 14, 2016 meeting were approved as written. <br /> <br />Director’s Report <br />Janice Tyler announced that the North Carolina Insurance Commissioner attended the SHIIP <br />Town Hall Meeting to be held at the Passmore Center on July 28th and that the OCODA is <br />helping to sponsor the Orange County Caregiver Summit – Navigating the Transitions in Life – <br />on August 9th at the Friday Center. The Jerry M. Passmore Center will have a renaming <br />celebration on September 29th at 10:30am. The revenues for the Soltys Adult Day Health <br />Program have begun to pick-up over the last month, but they are still struggling to make payroll <br />on a consistent basis. Expanded hours for the Seymour Center (approved and funded in the <br />FY17 budget) will begin on September 12th. The Seymour Center will now be open until 9pm <br />Monday-Thursday evenings and Saturdays. Mrs. Tyler announced that the 2016-17 Community <br />Resource Guide is completed and ready for distribution. It will be available at various sites <br />around town and will also be inserted into the Chapel Hill Herald Newspaper. Mrs. Tyler noted <br />that we are still waiting for the National Institute of Senior Centers to make their site visit, as <br />the final step in receiving our national accreditation. <br /> <br />New Business <br />Janice Tyler announced that Orange County’s paperwork was approved by AARP-NC to receive <br />designation as a World Health Organization/AARP Age-Friendly Community. This will become <br />the theme and framework for the development of the 2017-2022 Orange County Master Aging <br />Plan. <br /> <br />Continuing Projects <br />Yvonne Mendenhall summarized many of the Project EngAGE updates, including an “Engaging <br />Issues” presentation series planned at the Meadowmont Wellness Center. Mary Fraser <br />reviewed the OC CARES grant developments. All caregiver services and educational offerings <br />are now available. The Dementia Friendly Business initiative continues to grow.
