1 <br /> <br />ORANGE COUNTY <br />ADVISORY BOARD ON AGING <br />Minutes <br />April 10, 2012 <br /> <br />PRESENT: Leo Allsion, Heather Altman, Alex Castro, Peggy Cohn, Ed Flowers, Katherine Leith, Haryo <br />Marsosidiro, Joan Pellettier, Jeane Suddarth, Jan Wells <br />EXCUSED: Thelma Perkins <br />STAFF: Mary Fraser, Kathie Kearns, Janice Tyler <br />UNC CAPSTONE TEAM: Brenda Devellis, Phoebe Goldberg, Laura Major, Marcia Perritt, Hannah Prentiss- <br />Dunn, Rebecca Woodruff <br />The meeting was called to order at the Seymour Center by Chair Heather Altman. Following a correction <br />to the name of the National Association of County Commissioners, the minutes of the March 13 meeting <br />were approved with the motion offered by Alex Castro and the second by Peggy Cohn. <br />Janice Tyler began her Director’s Report by informing the Advisory Board of the announcement that <br />Britthaven Nursing Home is closing and the remaining residents are being placed in other facilities. She <br />added Mary Fraser will be the staff person assigned to both the Nursing Home and the Adult Care Home <br />Community Advisory Committees in Orange County. Discussion followed on the role that the Advisory <br />Board on Aging should play in Britthaven’s transition. Joan Pellettier suggested that a letter could be <br />sent from the Nursing Home Advisory Committee to Britthaven management offering to provide <br />assistance. <br />Ms. Tyler stated that the North Carolina Association on Aging is holding its annual training conference in <br />Raleigh on May 3-5. She also announced that the Seymour Center will be hosting its Fifth Anniversary <br />Gala on May 30 and that the Fourth Annual Resource Connections Fair will be held at University Mall in <br />Chapel Hill on May 9. <br />Janice Tyler informed the Advisory Board that Myra Austin has been chosen as the Department’s new <br />Senior Centers Administrator, creating a vacancy in the Wellness Coordinator position. An Orange <br />County Transit Plan public hearing was held on April 3. Alex Castro spoke on the need for an increase in <br />service for the rural Orange area. Another public hearing is scheduled for April 17 at the Southern <br />Human Services Center in conjunction with the Board of County Commissioners meeting. <br />The UNC HB/HE Capstone student team presented the Master Aging Plan to the Governor’s Advisory <br />Council and State Division of Aging and Adult Services Director Dennis Streets. Janice Tyler announced <br />that another Capstone team of 5 students will be working with Department on Aging in the next
