ORANGE COUNTY <br />ADVISORY BOARD ON AGING <br />Minutes <br />May 14, 2008 <br /> <br />Present: Jack Chestnut, Diane Henderson, Mary Ann Peter, Jerry Kruter, Fred <br /> Schroeder, Ellen Ozier-Hayes <br />Staff: Jerry Passmore, Al Terry <br />Excused: Peggy Cohn, Alice Gordon, Jan Wassel <br /> <br />Chair Jack Chestnut called the meeting to order at the Central Orange Senior Center. The <br />Advisory Board on Aging formally thanked the Board of County Commissioners for the <br />volunteer board gifts. Mr. Chestnut mentioned the first anniversary celebration for the <br />Seymour Senior Center to be held May 28, 2008. The recognition of the artist of the <br />artwork in the courtyard will be held at 12:45 p.m. during this celebration. He mentioned <br />the public hearing of the Orange County Comprehensive Plan scheduled for May 19, <br />2008 7:00 p.m. at the F. Gordon Battle Court House, Hillsborough. Jerry Passmore <br />suggested that members go to the county Planning Department website to view all aging <br />aspects of the plan. <br /> <br />Jerry Passmore and Jack Chestnut introduced Ms. Alvonia Baldwin, the new Adult Day <br />Director. Her first day was May 14, 2008. Mr. Passmore mentioned her background is in <br />Recreational Therapy and was a activity coordinator various long term care facilities. <br /> <br />Mr. Passmore presented the Older Americans Month Proclamation to be presented to the <br />Board of County Commissioners on May 20, 2008. Fred Schroeder stated he might <br />attend the meeting. Mr. Passmore stated this proclamation is in recognition for older <br />adults and members of the Aging Board. He also wanted to mention Alice Gordon has <br />been the Aging Board representative. Mary Ann Peter stated that older Americans had <br />contributed using past tense statements but should be stated that we should start counting <br />ages for future reference. Jerry Passmore mentioned he would try to modify the <br />statement and that older adults are a critical resource for the county as well as the state <br />right now as well as the future. <br /> <br />Mary Ann Peter made the motion to approve the minutes from April 9, 2008 Advisory <br />Board on Aging minutes and Jerry Kruter seconded. Motion carried. <br /> <br />Jack Chestnut presented the group with plans of the Corbinton Commons, planned senior <br />community in Hillsborough. He mentioned this is a 50 + community with assisted living <br />and CCRC on site similar to Galloway Ridge in Chatham County. Fred Schroeder <br />questioned if this is similar to Carol Woods. Mary Ann Peter mentioned how confusing <br />this development is due to the two separate developed areas. Jack Chestnut stated the <br />completion date is slated for three years. <br /> <br />Jerry Passmore discussed the relocation of the Inter-Faith Counsel Men’s Shelter. The <br />new location will be on the corner of Homestead road and Airport-MLK Blvd, former <br />site of Duke Power and close to the bus stop.
