2 <br />Joan Pellettier reported on the United Way 211 Promotion Committee. She informed the group <br />that local authors are being recruited to assist in this effort. She also stated that this free <br />information service is available 24 hours per day/7 days per week. The Committee will be <br />applying to the Blue Cross/Blue Shield foundation for a natural disaster grant up to $50,000. <br />Jerry Passmore reminded the Joint Session that the Department on Aging maintains a listing of <br />isolated persons in conjunction with the Department of Social Services. Once constructed, the <br />new senior centers will serve as emergency shelters. <br /> <br />Jerry Passmore updated the Joint Session on the progress of the new Orange County senior <br />centers. Ground has finally been broken for the Southern Orange Senior Center. The contractor <br />estimates completion in ten months. The lease for the current location has been extended until <br />December, 2005. He stated that, once construction has begun, either he or JaniceTyler will <br />attend bi-weekly meetings on-site with the architect and general contractor to review progress <br />and any construction issues. The Design Committee for the Central Orange Senior Center at the <br />Sportsplex has held its first meeting. Mariah McPherson, Mary Ann Peter, and Jan Wassel are <br />the Advisory Board on Aging’s representative to this committee. The next Design Committee <br />meeting will be held on February 22 and a tour of other senior centers in the area will be <br />conducted on February 28. Ann Johnson stressed the importance of senior center accreditation. <br />Mr. Passmore pointed out that the new centers will not be carbon copies of each other. He also <br />reported that the Master Aging Plan Update should be completed in the Fall. The Joint Session <br />was adjourned. <br /> <br />The Advisory Board on Aging meeting was called to order by Chair Jack Chestnut. The <br />representative of Bill Clark Homes will not be attending due to illness. In his absence Mr. <br />Chestnut informed the Board of the proposal to construct a senior housing development on <br />Orange Grove Road. Discussion followed on the amenities to be offered at this development and <br />the connection with the Department on Aging. Mary Ann Peter informed the Board that the <br />Hillsborough Town Council was in the process of developing a master building plan and any <br />proposal such as this should be tabled until its adoption. <br /> <br />The minutes of the January 6, 2006 meeting were approved upon the motion offered by Fred <br />Schroeder and the second by Jerry Kruter. Jerry Passmore reported that the Friends of the <br />Chapel Hill Senior Center had met recently to discuss how their funds will be used to support the <br />center after their obligation for 1/3 the Galleria lease cost expires June 30. Jack Chestnut <br />reported that the Senior Care Board had adopted a new staffing plan at its meeting that will <br />continue the part-time nurse contract with UNC Hospitals, employ a C.N.A. through a home <br />health agency for 10 hours per day, and contract with an activity Coordinator for up to 5 1/2 <br />hours of service each afternoon. Currently the day center averages 5-6 attendees each day. <br /> <br />Appointments to the Friends boards were postponed until a future meeting. Mr. Passmore <br />reported that the Board of County Commissioners approved the Department’s participation in the <br />UNC Home Visit Prevention Project application as this Board had recommended at its January <br />meeting. <br /> <br />There being no further business at this time, the meeting was adjourned. <br /> <br />Respectfully submitted, <br /> <br /> <br />Jerry M.
