1 <br />ORANGE COUNTY DEPARTMENT ON AGING <br />AND <br />UNITED WAY SENIOR ISSUES TEAM <br />JOINT MEETING <br /> <br />October 10, 2007 <br />Minutes <br /> <br />PRESENT: Myra Austin, Jack Chestnut, Peggy Cohn, Diane Henderson, Jerry Kruter, <br />Linda Orndt, Ellen Ozier-Hayes, Mary Ann Peter, Fred Schroeder, Angie <br />Welch <br /> <br />EXCUSED: Jan Wassel <br /> <br />STAFF: Lisa Berley, Bob Jones, Kathie Kearns, Jerry Passmore, Lauren Russell <br />(student), Al Terry <br /> <br />The Joint Meeting was called to order by Co-Chair Jack Chestnut. Following <br />introductions Mr. Chestnut announced plans for a public memorial service for Florence <br />Soltys on November 11 at the Seymour Center. He also reported that plans are underway <br />to request that the Board of County Commissioners name the new Central Orange Adult <br />Day Health Center in Hillsborough in memory of Ms. Soltys. The Board unanimously <br />endorsed this proposal. <br /> <br />Mr. Chestnut announced that the Friends of the Seymour Center, in conjunction with <br />JOCCA, will sponsor a new soup & salad bar option as part of the noontime senior lunch <br />program at the Seymour Center. The new service will begin on October 22, serving <br />from 11:30 am until 2:00 pm. This is a model project that has been approved by the NC <br />Division of Aging. <br /> <br />The minutes of the August 8 Joint Meeting were approved upon the motion provided by <br />Dianne Henderson and the second by Peggy Cohn. <br /> <br />In the absence of Co-Chair Steve Lackey, United Way staff person Angie Welch invited <br />agency representatives to give their reports. Linda Orndt announced that the Triangle <br />Radio Reading Service had held its gala fundraiser the previous week and raised $16,000. <br />Her agency will host an international radio reading service conference in May, 2008. The <br />local service has already begun streaming on the web and there are plans to expand <br />service through The Peoples Channel once an additional piece of broadcast equipment is <br />secured. <br /> <br />Myra Austin announced that the Wellness Program has begun several new programs <br />since moving into the Seymour Center, the most popular being the balance class. To <br />date, 191 persons have completed the functional fitness assessment required before <br />utilizing the Fitness Studio. One-hundred and forty persons have completed orientation <br />on the fitness equipment. The fee schedule was approved by the Board of County
