51
Describe the importance of transit with regards to affordable housing and use planning.
I see a direct correlation between good transit service and affordable housing and land use planning. If land
planning with affordable housing is located along transit routes, it can be extremely beneficial to low income
individuals and families. It can either help reduce the dependence of the use for a car or eliminate the need
for a.car.
Describe the importance of transit with regards to individuals with handicaps or disabilities.
Public transportation services can improve the quality of life for individuals with handicaps and /or individuals
with disabilities. Public transportation could possible enable these individuals to be able to get out of their
homes for work, appointments, shopping, and social engagements.
Describe the importance with regards to economic opportunity.
Public transportation is needed for continued economic growth. Alternatives to driving and.increased.trafic.
delays is necessary for the Triangle Area. In the years I have lived in Orange County, the traffic has increased
greatly along the 1 -40 corridor. My commute time has increased from 25 minutes one way to often times 45
minutes or longer, if I take 1 -40. 1 often take 1- 85/147, to avoid the increased traffic on 1 -40, especially in the
mornings into work. In my opinion, it would be good to have a transit route to RTP from Orange Co. To have
this transit option in place since Orange Co is growing, before a great influx of commuters clog the freeway,
as an option to get commuters off 1 -40, and reduce the increased traffic, could be very beneficial to Orange
Co. Especially now that the transit has routes to both Chapel Hill/ UNC and Durham /Duke are in place;
Have you had experiences with transit or other related issues in other places that could provide beneficial
information to this committee? (Please limit your response to 100 or fewer words.)
I have been taking public transit on and off since I was a small child with my mother growing up in Pittsburgh,
PA. I took public transportation all through my college years in Pittsburgh PA. During this time I worked my
way through college and graduate school. With good public transportation, I was able to work and go to
school without the added expense of a private vehicle. I also took public transit when I lived in the San
Francisco Bay Area. I took Caltrain to work for many years with connecting shuttles to business parks, or
walked to work.
Please tell us why you would like to be on the GoTriangle Transit Advisory Committee. (Please limit your
response to 100 or fewer words.)
I have been in the Triangle area, Orange County for 10 years. I have taken public transportation on and off .
over that period of time. I also have taken routes that are not direct, using transfers and multiple transit
systems. Starting next year when my office moves to downtown Raleigh, I will again be taking public
transportation on a daily basis. I have experience using transit systems in other areas of the United States on
a regular basis, over a period of time. I feel that with my varied experience I would be an asset to the
committee.
