I was appointed by the town council and
have served for 18 months. In this role, I review and provide guidance to the Chapel Hill town council
on development projects that range from small subdivisions to large commercial projects. This
position requires me to have a good knowledge of the towns LUMO or Land Use Management
Ordinance as well as transportation impacts and the towns 2020 plan. The Planning Commission
meets twice a month.
Additionally, I am the liaison to the towns Transportation and Connectivity Advisory Board. In this role,
I collect and feed back the issues as the board deliberates on projects that will have an impact to the
towns transportation and connectivity. In this role, I am required to be familiar with the towns
comprehensive plan, the bike plan and the connectivity plans the town is drafting currently as well as
with rapidly growing areas such as the Ephesus Fordham (AKA Blue Hill) area.
Non profits of note:
I am currently the president of the Bicycle Alliance of Chapel Hill (BACH). BACH is a non profit,
dedicated to improving Chapel Hill for the needs of cyclists. We have worked with the town to obtain
bike lanes in downtown, we have held cruiser rides with town staff, to provide them with some insights
to the issues cyclists face in town, and we petition the town for improved infrastructure. Prior to that, I
was the president of the Carolina Tarwheels Cycling club. The Tarwheels are a recreational club that
provides group rides and raises funds the club grants to local non profits that have cycling related
activities, especially youth oriented organizations.
GoTriangle connections:
I am a regular commuter on GoTriangle. I use the 805 and the 800, to commute to work in RTP. I
have also used the 700, the CRX and the 105 / 100 to make trips to Raleigh and Durham.
Additionally, I have volunteered my time to assist GoTriangle to perform commuting outreach at two
IBM locations in RTP, and have worked with GoTriangle employees to help promote transit.
I am a huge fan and advocate of regional transit in the area. I am experienced in working on boards,
and I am excited at the opportunity to assist GoTriangle in any way I can to provide better transit
options for myself and other users of transit as well as work to grow the usage and effectiveness of
transit in the Wake, Durham and Orange county area.
Thank you for your consideration
John Rees
