If so, how often? <br />For years I did not own a car and only used public transit. That includes 8 years in Washington, DC and 6 months <br />car -free in Chapel Hill. Additionally, in Chapel Hill, there was a period of about 3 years in which I used transit daily. I no\ <br />take cRf�� 15efolt"% t-y cggln�J�p use Chapel Hill Transit a few times per month. <br />I have spent many, many hours on public transit and plan on continuing to do so. <br />Describe the importance of transit with regards to affordable housing and land use planning. <br />One measurement of the affordability of an area is the amount that people need to spend on housing and transportation <br />combined. Poor households often spend a high percentage of their income on transportation. Public transit that connects <br />low- income areas with jobs and schooling reduce the need for as many cars per household. HUD and USDOT recommend <br />that an area be considered affordable if residents spend less than 45% of their income on housing & transportation. <br />Describe the importance of transit with regards to individuals with handicaps or disabilities. <br />Some people with disabilities are not able to drive. For these individuals, public transit offers increased mobility options. <br />helps people getting to jobs, healthcare, entertainment, and shopping. Depending on the individuals' abilities, both fixed <br />route and paratransit are crucial parts of the system to help people with disabilities <br />
