ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: August 22, 2006 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. J - W <br />SUBJECT: Special Request for Use of Forum 2006 Proceeds to Aid Low Income Seniors <br />DEPARTMENT: Manager's Office PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): <br />Preliminary Forum Agenda <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Gwen Harvey, Asst Manager , 245-2300 <br />Robin Barnhill and Pat Vandiviere, <br />Co-Chairs, Human Services <br />Advisory Commission <br />PURPOSE: To request BOCC permission to allow the Human Services Advisory Commission <br />to donate registration proceeds from the 2006 Human Services Issues Forum to Senior Care of <br />Orange County, Inc. to be used to provide emergency property tax assistance grants to elderly <br />low-income home owners. <br />BACKGROUND: The Human Services Advisory Commission, the Master Aging Plan (MAP) <br />Update Steering Committee, the Advisory Board on Aging, and the Department on Aging are <br />collaborating this year to present the 18th annual Human Services Issues Forum titled, <br />"Communities Responding to an Aging Society", on Wednesday, September 20, In the interest <br />of economy and symbolism of longstanding ecumenical support for serving the needy, the <br />Commission and its collaborators have agreed to hold Forum 2006 at the Chapel Hill Bible <br />Church at the carnet of Sage and Erwin Roads, The Forum will run from 8.30AM to 2:OOPM, A <br />preliminary program is attached foryour review. <br />In keeping with its theme, the Human Services Advisory Commission requests that the BOGC <br />allow the registration proceeds from the Forum to be designated to Senior Care of Orange <br />County, Inc. Senior Care of Orange, Inc. is a 501.c.3 established in 2004 for the purposes of <br />advocating, establishing and/or operating services in community settings, developing an <br />employment pool for certified nursing assistants, educating the general public, and receiving <br />financial and other support to benefit frail or disabled older adults in community settings, <br />The registration fee is $15.00 and typically 100 -125 persons attend the Forum.. On that basis, <br />there could potentially be up to $1,875 to be donated expressly for the purpose of providing <br />general assistance tc needy seniors through Senior Care of Orange County, Inc.. Last year, the <br />BOCC approved donation of Forum 2006: "Welcome Home: A Bold Proposal to End <br />Homelessness" proceeds in the amount of $1,116 equally between Orange Congregations in <br />Mission and Interfaith Council for support to homeless families. <br />
