Table 2 denotes these per capita income values and illustrates the disparity in <br />income within the county.' Currently per capita income in the US is $28,930, it is $25,920 in <br />North Carolina, and it is $56,459 in Chapel Hill. Now consider the case of Carrboro which has a <br />per capita income of $20,558. Columns 3, 4, and 5 show how Carrboro's per capita income <br />relates as a percentage to the US, NC, and Chapel Hill per capita income.6 In the first row we <br />see that Carrboro's per capita income is 71% of the nation's per capita income and is only 36% <br />as much as Chapel Hill's per capita income. Similarly, Chapel Hill's per capita income is almost <br />twice as much as per capita income in the nation, and is more than twice as large as per capita <br />income in the state of North Carolina. <br />s United States Census Bureau, www.census.gov <br />6 Chapel Hill's per capita income was chosen as a metric since it is the largest in the county.
