15
ORANGE COUNTY
Department of Environment,
Agriculture, Parks & Recreation
January 12, 2018
Dear Sir or Madam:
On January 23, the Orange County Board of County Commissioners will consider
adopting a map that identifies the proposed Mountains to Sea Trail route through
Orange County. The proposed trail route approval is the culmination of over 16
months of work and three community meetings in 2016 -2017. The January 23
meeting will be held at the Richard E. Whitted Center meeting room at 300 West
Tryon Street in Hillsborough. The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m.
You are receiving this letter because you are listed as the owner of property that
is either a) along the planned Mountains to Sea Trail route; or b) within 1000 feet
of that planned route. A red check mark in the upper right corner of this page
indicates if your property is along the proposed trail route.
The trail itself will most likely be a narrow 3 -6 foot natural surface path that
enables hikers to traverse the state, from, Clingman's Dome on the North
Carolina /Tennessee state line, to Jockeys Ridge State Park on the Outer Banks.
The Mountains to Sea Trail, or MST, is a part of the State Parks system. Some
portions of the trail already exist, and in many urban areas the trail uses existing
municipal greenways. But one of the major sections that remains to be
completed is in the Eastern Piedmont between Greensboro and the Falls Lake
Reservoir north of Durham.
As you can see on the attached map, in the eastern part of Orange County the
trail will follow the Eno River — including the Town of Hillsborough's Riverwalk.
Heading east, the MST exists on privately -owned land for 1.7 miles before
entering Eno River State Park to Durham County.
Orange County is the responsible party for working on the western section of the
trail that would connect Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area (and the
Hillsborough Riverwalk) southwest to Alamance County.
Orange County Department of Environment, Agriculture, Parks & Recreation
PO Box 8181, Hillsborough, NC 27278
Phone: (919) 245 -2510
Fax: (919) 644 -3351
