55 Describe the importance of transit with regards to individuals with handicaps or disabilities: For people for whom driving is not an option due to disability, it is critical that they have access to useful transit services to provide them with mobility options. Describe the importance of transit with regards to economic opportunity. Car ownership is expensive. As a physician at UNC, I have many patients who struggle to attend critical medical appointments because of their inability to get transportation to the hospital or clinic. The availability of convenient, reliable transportation also impacts people's ability to access employment opportunities and keep jobs once they've earned them. Have you had experiences with transit or other related issues in other places that could provide beneficial information to this committee? (Please limit your response to 100 or fewer words) Along with my daily transit ridership here, I've ridden on transit systems in communities throughout the US, Europe, and Australia, and can provide useful insight not only on transit services but how transit can link with other services such as bikeshare and good pedestrian accommodations to make transit use easier and more feasible for people. Please tell us why you would like to be on the GoTriangle Transit Advisory Committee. (Please limit your response to 100 or fewer words) As a daily transit rider, I have a vested interest in making sure that the region's transit agencies make their customers' needs paramount. I also want to advocate for my many patients who struggle to access jobs, social services, and other resources in the community due to a lack of transportation or transit options.
