If so, how often?
For years I did not own a car and only used public transit. That includes 8 years in Washington, DC and 6 months
car -free in Chapel Hill. Additionally, in Chapel Hill, there was a period of about 3 years in which I used transit daily. I no\
take cRf 15efolt"% t-y cgglnJp use Chapel Hill Transit a few times per month.
I have spent many, many hours on public transit and plan on continuing to do so.
Describe the importance of transit with regards to affordable housing and land use planning.
One measurement of the affordability of an area is the amount that people need to spend on housing and transportation
combined. Poor households often spend a high percentage of their income on transportation. Public transit that connects
low- income areas with jobs and schooling reduce the need for as many cars per household. HUD and USDOT recommend
that an area be considered affordable if residents spend less than 45% of their income on housing & transportation.
Describe the importance of transit with regards to individuals with handicaps or disabilities.
Some people with disabilities are not able to drive. For these individuals, public transit offers increased mobility options.
helps people getting to jobs, healthcare, entertainment, and shopping. Depending on the individuals' abilities, both fixed
route and paratransit are crucial parts of the system to help people with disabilities
